Hi Graeme.
Taking on Eddy Merckx … wow that’s brave! But, being an indoor trainer user (and a listener of your podcasts) I know that you’re right; indoor trainer sessions can be as valuable riding miles. Recovering from significant injury sustained a year ago I’ve had to do many indoor miles to get back to fitness. The secret is to target HIT sessions - The sessions you advocate. I ride for 60 minutes at a time and vary the routines.
Off the bike I use power breathing routines with flex exercises to build stability.
All of these sessions have and continue to work well for me.
My message (to add to yours)? If a 51 year old at 1.78m can maintain 65 kgs, kick-up his fitness and ride more strongly HIT sessions on an indoor trainer DO WORK.
Ride on.
Julian
