I can’t help you…

One thing I have learned in all my years as a professional trainer, consultant, and owner for Cyclo-CLUB and Cyclo-CORE is that I can provide all the resources and support one needs to ride strong and be happy, but I can not help them achieve results. Only they (you) can do that.

Today, I want to share with you a quick podcast and intro consult I did with Brian, a new Premium Plus Cyclo-CLUB Member asking me how to best get started with all of our resources for his ultimate goal of a sub 6 hour El Tour de Tucson.

He's figured out that his secret for success is "all up to him". He discovered this fact though something that may surprise you. I'm pumped to have him, because I can hear in his voice that his success is self-evident, we just get to come along for the ride!

Enjoy...

Bob took action and results were staggering…

Graeme,

Just wanted to provide you with some feedback on your club website. I have been a casual non-membership user of your program, bought a few Cyclo-CORE DVDs last year and have been reading your emails periodically. A friend asked me in March to ride the 3 State 3 Mountain century ride with him in Chattanooga TN, on May 2nd. This ride climbs approx. 8,000 feet with grades ranging from 7% - 18%.

When I agreed to ride knowing he would want to do the 100 mile, I thought I might be able to finish the 62 mile route but it would be a stretch for me. You see, I'm a casual rider with a family and a career and only one other flat century ride in my experience. In addition, I fractured my left lateral tibia plateau and tore my left rotator cuff in a skiing accident December 31, 2008. My leg healed quickly and is at 100%. However, my rotator cuff is about 50% but doesn't cause me too many problems while riding. Anyway, I decided to join your club about a month ago in preparation of the 3S3M ride. In the 30 days or so of being a member, I listen to all you podcasts.

I do your "On the Go, At The Desk Workout" 2 - 3 times a week. I watched your Tuscany Climb, I did 5 days of your 7 day climbing bootcamp, I applied all of your nutrition tips for endurance riding from your podcast interview with the guy that did the 159 mile ride, minus the Perpetuem (I don't do well with it) but replaced it with a similar product. The results for me on the ride were staggering.

In addition to my reservations about finishing the ride, the weather brought on an additional challenge, a couple of inches of rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in the first 4 hours of the ride. There was so much rain on the first climb, I thought my contacts were going to come out. In addition, I never have seen people walking their bikes down hill. In fact, going down hill was more laborious than climbing. People were complaining from hand cramps from grabbing the brakes all the way down the hill. We were soaked from head to toe. People were shivering from the cold at the first rest stop at mile 21.

So with the minimum amount of time to train and the addition of the weather challenge, I'm glad to say that I did finish the ride, not the 62 mile route, but the full 100 miles with climbs ranging from 7% to 18% grades. The best part of all, I could have done at least another 20 - 30 miles. I felt great at the end of the ride. In addition to the training, I believe a large contributing factor was the nutritional part of your plan. I put all my trust in to your message about nutrition, especially the part about not eating the morning of the ride. I replaced the rest stop food with the carb/protein mix hydration, hourly gels, anti-fatique caps, and endurolyte caps. In addition, on the long climbs I applied the mental message of your Tuscany Climb video and climbed at my new level.

It's great to know that I don't have to train 200 miles a week to ride challenging endurance rides.

Thanks again and good-luck on your "Death Ride"!

Bob Groeger, Cyclo-CLUB Member
